"If there is an overriding theme of my career, it is that I've always enjoyed the people I've worked with and the clients I've served. Many of my clients have become friends and the business relationships transcend traditional accounting. I've helped clients position and negotiate their businesses for sale, but I've also helped them decide on a car to buy or which college they should choose for their children. I get asked questions that friends would ask other friends about life."
Al Kaufmann joined Moquist Thorvilson Kaufmann Kennedy & Pieper LLC in 1985 after more than seven years in audit work for an international CPA firm. He was looking for more opportunities to pursue his interests in closely-held and family owned companies as well as a way to broaden his skills. Although audit and assurance is his home base, Al's experience in firm management and business consulting have resulted in a solid reputation for advising clients on a variety of issues including M&A, tax issues, strategic planning, transactional structuring and negotiations and operational consulting.
Sharing firm management with John Thorvilson, Al is able to maintain a base of clients and provide them with insight on management and business decisions that he encounters daily. "We know what it takes to run our business and provide that insider's perspective to our clients."
Whether he is working with staff on their professional development, advising clients on their businesses or strategizing for Moquist Thorvilson Kaufmann Kennedy & Pieper LLC, Al credits his success to his ability to quickly switch gears and give his full attention to any issue. In doing so, he can synthesize and interpret the latest technical and industry information and communicate it in a way that staff and clients can easily understand and implement.
"I may do 15 to 20 different things in a day, but I'm a good listener and a relatively quick study."
